The Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) is pleased to announce that the Kiwanis Club of Willowbrook-Burr Ridge has recently donated $432 to continue the sponsorship of eith needy children through HSP's Children's Birthday Project (CBP) for the 8th year. The donation to the Children's Birthday Project will provide birthday gifts for children whose families cannot afford to give them the birthday that they deserve.
As a service organization, the Kiwanis Club of Willowbrook-Burr Ridge helps locally as well as nationally. Sandy Schmidt, president, says, "The club's largest fundraiser is a golf outing, which is held during the spring." Other fundraisers held throughout the year include: a pancake breakfast in December, selling peanuts on street corners in September, and selling bratwursts at their local Harvest Fest. Schmidt stated, "We like working with HSP because they offer service projects that the club can support monetarily as well as the opportunity to get involved with hands on projects."
The Kiwanis Club of Willowbrook-Burr Ridge was founded in 1977. The club's mission is to serve the children of the world. The club's board consists of 40 members with 11 people being members of the board. Out of the 11 board members, five are elected members and the other six are officers. The board decides on which programs they would like to support. The board tries to support local programs which are dedicated to children. In additin to the club's donation to HSP they also donate to Spastic Paralysis, a camp in Indiana for handicaped children, and also provide scholarships for high schools students every year.
Karole Kettering, HSP Founder/Executive Director, stated, "We are deeply grateful for the steadfast dedication and support of the Kiwanis Club of Willowbrook-Burr Ridge. They have brightened the eyes of needy children for eight years now. Their commitment allows us to bring so much hope and joy to these young, impressionable children. The club's generosity and support lays a strong foundation for these children, leaving them with cherished memories."
The Children's Birthday Project celebrates the birthdays of needy children. Each child receives a 20-25 lb. box containing 4 new books, 4 to 10 new toys, stuffed animals, a new game, various filler gifts such as bubbles and card games, school supplies, and a party-in-a-box filled with all the items necessary to have a wonderful birthday party.
